» The Republicans have put up an African American politician from Maryland as their answer to Baraca Obama (sp?) at the convention tonight. One of his speech points was on having the "right to create legacy wealth for our children"
Isn't that the root of aristocracy?
Arnold's speech was, well Arnold. He worked in several catchphrases and put forward an interesting list of items that most people would agree with-- saying that if you agree with those things, you are a Republican. It was a little simplistic, but an interesting tact.
Laura Bush, is the First Lady. She gave a gracious and fine speech, fairly non-political.
The Bush Twins shouldn't speak anymore :)

» I played my first full game of HeroClix last Thursday. You can view the summary sheet, with pictures, of the game, I put together and how it went down.
I was suprized at how fast paced the game is compared to Games Workshop miniature games I've played previously. I didn't care for the game maps that came with it so I built my own, some of which you can see in the summary PDF above. (I built the buildings off of some photos I found on the web... so hopefully the graphitti doesn't say anything profane in another language or anything.)

» Had an interesting experience this evening. I thought my apartment was on fire. I look up and there is a heavy haze of smoke everywhere. I walk out of my back room and as I'm going toward the livingroom and kitchen the smoke haze is getting thicker and thicker. As it turns out the Apartment below me was grilling on their deck and all the smoke was wafting up and going into my apartment through the open doorwall. Always nice to think your place is on fire though.
Comic Reviews
Go to Mile High Comics and read 30 current Marvel Comics (Most if not all, in their entirety)
Dr. Strange #1 - JMS, Petersen
Good story, very introductory and very much designed for the eventual tradepaperback. I know very little about Dr. Strange, other than he was a surgeon that got in an accident and could no longer do surgery, and somehow he received the eye of Amagato and became the Earth's Sorcer Supreme, and oh yeah there's a lot of astral plane stuff too. In anycase, none of that figures into this first issue much. Mostly JMS starts organizing his cards on the table for later.
I was going to buy this issue in the store, but since reading it online for free (see below) I think I'll skip the purchase. I'll flip through the second issue in the store, but if the pacing stays at this level, I might wait to read it in its entirety when it's collected as a single book.
Read the complete first issue of JMS's Doctor Strange at Mile High Comics.
Madrox #1 - Peter David, Pablo Raimondi
Another issue I was going to buy but get to read free online instead. Thing is, this ones in my pull list I think so I'll probably still have to buy it :(
Anyway, good first issue, I didn't feel like I had to understand anything in current X-Continuity (which is a good thing since I know nothing of what is currently happening in the X books). Story is much better than average. Art fits the material well, but some of the photoshop coloring is poor. Definently go read this one. Even non-comics fans may enjoy.
Read the complete Madrox first issue free at Mile High Comics.
Warlock #1 - Greg Pak, Charles Adlard
Odd.
Read the complete Warlock first issue free at Mile High Comics.
The New Invaders #1 - Allan Jacobsen, C P Smith
Eh. Not a big fan of World War Two inspired comics. To me it always underscores the unnatural agelessness of the WWII heroes. Nice art, although it seems almost a little too overproduced.
Read the complete Invaders first issue free at Mile High Comics.
Powerless #1 - Matt Cherniss & Peter Johnson, Michael Gaydos
Fairly good tale, in a similiar vein as Superman Secret Identity. all of Marvel's most popular and familiar characters are represented in this tale that follows a "What if" noone had superpowers "where would they be" situation.
Read the complete Powerless first issue free at Mile High Comics.

Maybe they put in some extra swear words or something? No idea. Anyway, if you've seen this in the theatre, move along, nothing more to see here.

JSA #63 and #64 - Johns, Ordway
Good Solid Art on a title with diverse characters and costumes that can be tough to make work together. This two parter search for Sand: Waking the Sandman is an ok enough read. There is alot going on and a large cast to give spotlight moments to but Geoff Johns makes his tale work ably as something self contained while still setting up a half dozen story threads to unravel later. Good book for older continuity-heavy fans.

» Teen Titan's returns to the anime inspired quicktakes and more lighthearted animation style this week as Cyborg infiltrates the Hive "High School". Eh.
» Justice League also goes with a lighter episode, penned by Paul Dini involving Circe, Wonder Woman turned into a pig, Zatanna, and Bwanna Beast (Yes you read that right, Bwanna Beast.) All that is topped by the scene summed up in the pic at right. Batman singing, "Am I Blue" on a club stage.

Superman #207 and #208 - Azzarello, Lee
Y'know several issues into this thing and I still really don't follow this story. Something about the odd pacing and the slow movement, seems to have me lost. Honestly, I have no idea what this run is about. Jim Lee's art is nice though, and #208 features Lee drawing the JLA which is a good thing.

Garden State
Odd [R] 1hr 41min
In Theatres: ???? Date I saw it: 8/24/04 at Star Alpine
Trippy little independentish flick that gets less trippy as the movie progresses. There's a reason behind that. The Scrubs Actor J-something or other Braff(?) Wrote, Directed, Starred etc. this tale of a guy who goes back to New Jersey for his mother's funeral. Weird slice of life vignettes ensue. And then there is Natalie Portman too. The cast is odd, as is what little of a plot is strung together. This is one of those: journey is more important than the destination films, so if you see it don't wonder too strongly about what direction it's going. I like these type of films but for those who prefer the standard three act movie style, you might want to skip this one. If you like stuff like Six Feet Under, Rescue Me, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. etc. You might enjoy this one.

» I haven't posted much over the last week, but still had the most "Unique" visitors, for the week, ever at 222 (which beat out last week's 221!). For all those Googlers out there hitting my pages, welcome to my little ongoing vanity blog of geek revelry. And to my friends and acquaintances, I can't believe you keep coming back to this site ;) Really how much comic stuff can you stand from me? lol.
» I was in the Detroit Area over the last couple days. On my way back to GR, I swung by a Comic Store in Kalamazoo, Exit 76b North off of i94: Fanfare Sports Entertainment, which was reccomended by a co-worker. The store is not very well titled, since it appears primarily as a comic book store first and foremost. Very nice place, well lit, clean, and organized. Lots of stuff, nicely presented. » Here's some pics of the JLU episode Kid's Stuff from two weeks ago, featuring the "Big Four"-- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, as 8 year old versions of themselves. I thought this episode was a little cutesy at first but I caught it a second time and it grew on me. Fun half hour.
» I don't have too much to say about this past week's JLU Episode: Hawk and Dove. I never followed those characters in the comics. Overall I thought this was very similiar to the opening season Green Arrow episode. I did find it interesting that the voices of Hawk and Dove were played by the two brothers from the Wonder Years The pic at right is from the opening of the episode where Wonder Woman in civilian clothes foils a bank robbery.
» If you haven't caught the last two parter "Aftershock" episodes of Teen Titan's these past two weeks, you've missed out on some animated superhero goodness. The Titan's drop the wild anime "takes" for a couple weeks and do a pretty straightforward and darker tale of the return of Tera the Teen Titan traitoress. Pic at right is from the opening of the second part which featured a pretty cool action sequence with the Titans in silhouette and fog.

Identity Crisis #3 - Meltzer, Morales
It's not a good time to know a superhero. Another minor character appears to buy it this issue. There's alot of reality being injected into superhero fantasy in this tale.... but it's a very good read. I'd say go buy but if you buy comics you're already picking this one up anyway right?

» One of the Best Ever Uses of the Irony tag on FARK (although technically more hypocritical than ironic) which linked to this story on the upcoming Colorization of the Black and White Three Stooges films.
"Star Wars" creator George Lucas, who testified with Steven Spielberg before Congress in the 1980s against colorization and other forms of alteration, said the process yanks such slapstick performers as the Stooges out of the black-and-white universe they belong in.
"Would color distract from their comedy and make it not as funny anymore?" Lucas said. "Maybe just the fact that they're in black and white makes it funny, because their humor is dated. But by putting it in black and white, it puts it in a context where you can appreciate it for what it was.
"But you try to make it in full living color and try to compare it to a Jim Carrey movie, then it's hard for young people to understand. Because you're then thinking you're comparing apples to apples, when you're not. You're comparing apples to oranges. I'm saying it's not fair to the artist."

Found the "Morph Gear" Justice League Green Lantern (pictured far right) today at Target. There are some slight sculpting differences from the other three. It is the most stable figure to date, even if, the equipment it wears challenges the figure's ability to stand straight. Without the equipment on the legs are noticibly thicker and the arms stick out a bit more "agressively". The green of the figure is a slight bit darker and this figure has a metallic silver emblem instead of the white on the other three. Also, on this figure the ring circle was on his hand but not painted.
The force shield suit is still the best accessory IMHO; however, this new figure is the most sturdy of the bunch. I think it's strong enough that a kid could actually play with this one.

» Fairly bizarre new Episode of Teen Titans tonight. They introduced a new Mxyzptlk/Bat Mite-type character from another dimension patterned after Robin-- his "DNA buddy" they say, named: Nosyargkcid. Spelled backwards that's Dick Grayson-- which you can see from the scrolling text in the spliced together screen caps at right. The magical imp is immediately nicknamed "Larry"
If this Teen Titans Robin is Dick Grayson and not Tim Drake that twists up the DC animated continuity a little doesn't it?
» On tonight's new episode of Justice League Unlimited, the Unlimited part is forgotten for a week and the episode focuses on a Moore/Gibbons comic book story adaptation exclusively featuring the Big Three: Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman fighting a villian from last season: Mogul. It's an ok episode even though it feels a little rushed in the new half hour format. Highlights include Diana's Invisible Jet, a Krypton flashback/hallucination and the three heroes spending alot of time calling each other by their secret identity names which I always find cool for some reason.

Very Good Movie. Interesting Characters. Tom Cruise plays bad guy Tom Cruise (Really doesn't he always more or less play the same character? He's always fun to watch but all of his characters tend to be similiar.) Jamie Foxx excels as the Cab Driver sucked into extenuating circumstances. There are a couple underlying messages in play in this picture and plenty of suspense. I don't spell check! Most of the time the Quotes of the Day are by someone else, and sometimes I misremember them abit... and they are taken out of context. I often state my opinions as facts. I'm aware that can be annoying? Occasionally I edit content on these pages after initially posting them. Sometimes I type the word "Fnck". Flip the "n" over... I don't have a problem with the word myself, I just type it that way to slip it past overzealous work censorship programs. I'm also aware that I spend too much time on the internet and that it's nice outside and I really should go out and play.
