One interesting observation at the end: it appears that not only do the heroes shower with their masks on (see left) but they have a coed locker room too, so the unrated DVD versions of the episodes should fly off the shelves ;)
I enjoyed this movie mostly for its pacing and characters. For me the suspense portions were generally predictable, but there is some very good moviemaking here. Be prepared for a very long set-up on this film.
There was one large plotpoint that really bugs me: Scroll though the below:
SPOILERS
On balance the man also seems thoughtful and intelligent.
The Republican response in a month should be very interesting to see.
This sucks.
Watched most of today's Democratic Convention coverage on CNN today. Eh.
I missed the Gore speech, but did see Carter and both Clintons. Carter's speech was ok. He definitely had the best line of the evening (above). Hillary was her usual uninspiring self. I found myself mostly trying to see if she could form a wrinkle in her forehead or communicate any expression through her eyebrows. Bill Clinton of course is a masterful public speaker and has great hair, so as these things go, his was an easiest speech to watch.
It didn't suck as bad as I expected it to.
Same basic origin as the Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman in the Batman Returns movie (12 years ago, can you believe that?). Mousy girl gets killed by evil boss and is resurrected by groups of cats.
The better parts of the movie focussed on Halle Berry out of costume, often climbing around her apartment on the phone, breaking up a noisy party in the middle of the night, or playing basketball.
Overall, the movie felt very much like a scaled up episode of the now defunct WB Birds of Prey TV series and I'd have to say, I prefered the Huntress character. Wait for Cable.
I thought the superhero persona "The Death Ray" was a very interesting way to get a mainstream reader like me to sit through a story about a delusional serial killer.
I also loved the oversize format and paper stock. The comic even has an "old smell" to it that perfectly compliments the 70s era it takes place in. Do Get.
4. Followed by the conclusion of our hero 'to repress his emotions over his abusive parent issues lest his awesome power lay waste to the universe.' Whereby the repressions sets up the opportunity for more endless internal square box thoughtful introspection/naration boxes in future stories.
Also a plea to DC. Please don't let writer's who disagree with the "Fearless" concept, write Hal Jordan. Honest. Fearless. Willpower. Make a little checklist with those words and the following sentence above it: "I agree to the basic Hal Jordan character premises outlined below:". Then have the writer sign this statement of principles before each story. 'course these are just my opinions.
JLA #101 - Austen, Garney
"Pain of the Gods" Storyline.
Art is fine, but curiously there is no JLA in this issue, really it's a Superman story, and last I checked there were almost a dozen Superman books out there and the title of this is supposed to be JLA. It looks like they will be doing different JLA spotlight issues on each hero over the next several issues. Since most of the JLA have a least one solo book to their name this seems like a waste, unless of course you are DC and are really more interested in reprinting the whole thing as a trade later.
My only comment on the story itself is about the scene with Superman in the Watchtower. Green Lantern should have walked into the room and paraphrased Tom Hanks from A League of their Own. Upon seeing Superman, he should have said: "Crying? there's no crying in Justice League!"
Skip this storyline.
Teen Titans #13 - Johns, Grummet.
Excellent Art. Filler issue/prologue to the next story arc. Raven gets a lower back tattoo. Kid Flash gets a Green Lantern logo tattoo (which quickly disapears due to his hyper metabolism???).
Next Issue, everyone gets Beast Boy powers.
PS. I Loved the Old School represent T-shirt on Bart: "Wizard is About to Die, Needs Food Badly." Nice Gauntlet Video Game reference.

» More HBO to watch on Sunday now, becasue of the addition of Entourage a new half-hour show that I think I would best describe as Curb Your Enthusiam meets Sex in the City, for guys.
Six Feet Under is already appointment viewing and Entourage if this first episode is any indication, will mean that I'll be in front of the TV for an extra 30 min every Sunday Night. Comedic but but not sitcomy, this show follows an up and coming young actor (28) and his entourage: his slightly older brother and two High School best friends as they live life in Hollywood. It was also a delight to see Jeremy Piven playing the "star" of the show's Hollywood Agent. He's quite good and brings all his manic energy to bear in an Arlis-like role.
If you have HBO. Do Watch, it's good.

Bad movie. Even if you rightly ignore the touchstones to Asimov and focus on this as it's own movie uninspired by anything. It's still bad.
Asimov's robot stories center around logic. There's no logic in this movie, not even internal logic. Very bad. Don't go see.

I watched the premiere of this show on the Sci-Fi Channel today. I like the original movie, but I never got deep into the original Stargate TV show (although there are a handful of those shows I've seen which I did very much enjoy.). Still, I thought I would give this show a try.
Long review short: Didn't care for it. Acting was eh. Characters not terribly compelling as an ensemble. WAY TOO MUCH exposition, the motto of this premiere seems to be: tell don't show. Very uneven set design. After about an hour and a quarter I gave up on watching it.

Identity Crisis #2 - Brad Meltzer, Rags Morales
Great book. Well crafted story. Fully formed characters. Great art. Just really well done. I'd pay $10 a regular issue if Meltzer was put in charge of the regular JLA title as the ongoing writer. DC could keep the $2.25 and the other $7.75 could go to him. That's got to be worth him quitting his day job right?

Normally I enjoy Sterling's site immensely but on the topic of doing Green Lantern as a comedy I couldn't disagree more. DC has many properties (Plastic man, Ambush Bug, Amazing Man, Metal Men, Shazam, etc.) that would lend themselves much more readily to a lighthearted comedic treatment. Green Lantern as a comedy movie would be a terrible waste of a Sci-fi/superhero film opportunity. Plus I don't need a Jack Black as GL action figure.

Supreme Power #11 - JMS, Gary Frank
Not a bad filler issue... Usually JMS paces the individual books better than this though. This particular issue will definently work better in the eventual trade reprint, due mostly to the large amount of exposition within. Most of the exposition, back story on Hyperion's origin(?), is given by Zarda, Power Princess, and her broken dazed english is a little hard to follow. But she delivers pages and pages of the dialog naked, and Frank is a very good artist, so on that level it works ;) It's just going to be a hard issue to lend to non-comics friends without looking like some kindof pervert.
"Really the story is very good. I read it for the story" I'll say.
"Yeah, sure, whatever" they'll say.
Overall it continues to be one of the better series out there. Go Get.

» The Beat has pics (which I have badly photoshopped at right) of the three confirmed Fantastic Four actors as well as the rumored fourth (Dark Angel: Jessica Alba). Horatio Hornblower (aka Ioan Gruffudd) )playing Mr. Fantastic is an excellent casting decision. And the actor for Ben Grim, The Thing (Michael Chiklis, The Shield) looks good too. Pretty much anyone could play Johnny Storm, The Human Torch... They should find a natural blonde guy. Not too sure about Dark Angel as Sue Storm the Invisible Woman. Generally I think of Sue as one of the more wholesome June Cleaver characters of the superhero world... But puting Alba in a skintight Fantastic Four jumpsuit won't hurt ticket sales I suppose.
I'm mostly glad that earlier rumors of Brendan Fraiser as Reed Richards didn't pan out.

King Arthur Dark Ages Adventure [PG-13] 2 hr 10 min
In Theatres: 7/7/04 Date I saw it: 7/7/04 at Rivertown Cinemark
Pretty good movie, familiar story but with the more fantastic elements striped away. A little bit of a Gladiator feel to it on a less grand scope. Not a blockbuster film but still fun. Whoever played the villian did an excellent job. Clive Owen, playing the part of Arthur, was very good. I haven't noticed him before, but he's definently a guy's actor on screen in the tradition of Sean Connery, Harrison Ford and the Gladiator Russel Crowe. No wimpy boy band actors here. Guinvere is played pretty wild and maybe a bit too modern as "one of the boys" but other than that I thought this to be a very enjoyable movie.

JLA #100 - Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke
Coming off the very bad Byrne/Claremont/Ordway JLA Dooom Patrol Launch... the JLA is once again used to launch a bad super-team idea: JLA Elite. Too Dark, Too Dark. Dark doesn't work in the DCU. Maybe they'll figure that out eventually. Bad issue. Skip it.
Doom Patrol #1 - John Byrne, Doug Hazelwood
I preordered this before I picked up and read the introductory story in JLA. At least i'm only out $2.50. Do skip this continuity nightmare and bore-fest. Within a few months when it is cancelled we can all pretend it didn't happen.
Teen Titan's #12 - Geoff Johns, Mike McKone
Ok ending to the 4-part Raven story. Good Art. A little too much metaphysical stuff (Raven, Brother Blood, disembodied Jericho etc.) for my tastes but overall ok.
Ex Machina #1 - Brian Vaughan, Tony Harris
EXCELLENT. Now this is a good comic. Fresh characters. Fresh concept. Interesting twist on a reality just this side of the real world.
Ex Machina is sortof The West Wing meets a grown-up Doug from New Mutants. Mitchell Hundred after a brief foray as the world's first superhero becomes the Mayor of New York City. It's political intrique with a superpowered coating. Fantastic art and a story that weaves back and forth through time to introduce us to the characters and world all while building to a great last page splash pic. This is one that even the non-comic crowd can enjoy. Go Get, Go Read, Share with your friends.

These are all the earier versions of the figures that had the more limited articulation which makes standing them up together like placing dominoes (They do come with stands but those are big and bulky and they make standing the figures close together difficult). I didn't want to take off these holders and all the towel bars I found were inflexible and non-adjustable.

Clothing stores crave burger chain's merchandise
July 4, 2004, 1:24 PM
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- White Castle's quirky reputation for peddling small, square burgers at all hours has stirred cravings in some unlikely places -- department stores and clothing retailers that cater to teens.
Department store chain Lord and Taylor has T-shirts with four designs featuring White Castle's logo and slogans. Apparel chains including Hot Topic, Buckle and Urban Outfitters also sell the clothing.

Thoughts that might not be coherent
This is just a little thought that started in my head when I came accross an article on Slashdot about the Chinese censoring SMS messages.
I think there is too much seperation, in our American discussion, over contries like China, former Iraq and other's forms of goverment as compared to ours. It appears to me, that there is this notion that America is special, that our constitution and rule of law is largely infallible and that we are inherently more just than the rest of the world.
While I believe as a nation it is good for us to have a positive opinion of ourselves and a healthy amount of patriotism, I think it would also benefit our country to be more aware that people all over the world are inherently the same as us and that the ideas in many of their goverment's that we are opposed to, didn't just happen. Either their people allowed them to happen, or a majority of people from countries outside their nation encouraged them to be the way they are. My point being, if we are not vigilant with participating and overwatching our own republic and it's actions, then anything we see accross the world could happen here as well.
It's been said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. With that in mind, I believe that it is our own successes that we should be most cautious about. We should never come to believe that we are always right. We should always fully examine the possibility that in any given action there are a number of other points of view greater than sides of a coin.
I believe we should also be wary of ever fully accecepting the concept, that is popular now, of our goverment being something seperate from ourselves. The moment that happens, the goverment may begin to see itself seperate from the people and that is historically not a good environment.
Get out and vote this fall. The choices might not be perfect or close to ideal, but life and choices are never perfect. At a minimum, spending a little time keeping up with the news and spending 30 minutes or less every four years at the polls to at least make and informed vote in the presidential election is a small price to pay to help maintain our republic democracy.
If we let ourselves lose our republic democracy by not taking this simple action, the costs to our society will be much greater than that little amount of time we have given up.
Happy 4th of July.

The primary difference is that monkeys are happy to stay in small groups and rarely interact with others outside their monkey gang. This is why they rarely go to war, though when they do it is widely thought to be hilarious. Humans, however, require cars and oil and quality manufactured goods by the fine folks at 3M and Japanese video games and worldwide internets and, most importantly, governments. All of these things take groups larger than 150 people to maintain effectively. Thus, we routinely find ourselves functioning in bunches larger than our primate brains are able to cope with.

I don't spell check! Most of the time the Quotes of the Day are by someone else, and sometimes I misremember them abit... and they are taken out of context. I often state my opinions as facts. I'm aware that can be annoying? Occasionally I edit content on these pages after initially posting them. Oh Yeah... this paper background was lifted from some web site or other... I've wanted to add this very same type of background and well I suppose I could crumple some paper and scan it AND I wouldn't mention it at all but y'know I'm a graphic designer and I thought I'd mention it just in case someone thought I made it, which I didn't but I was going to...(the wire rings on the side I made myself though) Sometimes I type the word "Fnck". Flip the "n" over... I don't have a problem with the word myself, I just type it that way to slip it past overzealous work censorship programs. I'm also aware that I spend too much time on the internet and that it's nice outside and I really should go out and play.
